PHI & Data

Limited Data Set

PHI with direct identifiers removed, usable for research or operations under a data use agreement.

A Limited Data Set is protected health information (PHI) from which direct identifiers (such as names and street addresses) have been removed, but which may still contain dates and some geographic detail. It is not fully de-identified.

Because it still carries some risk, a Limited Data Set may only be used or disclosed for research, public health, or health care operations, and only under a signed Data Use Agreement (DUA).
