A Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates an encrypted tunnel over a public network, so that data traveling between a user or site and a remote system is protected from interception.
In HIPAA environments, VPNs are commonly used to give administrators and clinicians secure remote access to systems holding ePHI, supporting the transmission security safeguard by keeping that traffic encrypted in transit.
