Integrity Controls
Measures ensuring ePHI is not improperly altered or destroyed.
Integrity Controls are a HIPAA Security Rule technical safeguard requiring measures that protect ePHI from being improperly altered or destroyed, whether accidentally or maliciously.
Common implementations include checksums and hashing, version control, database constraints, and audit logging to detect unauthorized changes. Integrity is one leg of the confidentiality-integrity-availability triad the Security Rule is built around.
