Recovery Point Objective (RPO)

The maximum amount of data, measured in time, an organization can afford to lose in an outage.

Recovery Point Objective (RPO) is the maximum acceptable amount of data loss, measured as a period of time, following an outage or disaster. An RPO of one hour means backups must be frequent enough that no more than an hour of data is ever lost.

RPO drives backup frequency and replication strategy, and together with Recovery Time Objective (RTO) it defines the core targets of a backup and disaster recovery plan for systems holding ePHI.
