Recovery Time Objective (RTO)

The maximum acceptable time to restore a system after an outage.

Recovery Time Objective (RTO) is the maximum acceptable length of time a system or application can be down after an outage before the impact becomes unacceptable. An RTO of four hours means service must be restored within four hours of a disruption.

RTO drives choices about redundancy, failover, and standby infrastructure. With Recovery Point Objective (RPO), it defines the targets of a backup and disaster recovery plan and supports HIPAA's availability requirement.
