Why CodeIgniter needs a HIPAA host, not a generic one

CodeIgniter runs a great deal of software that was written years ago and still does its job every day. Keeping it running safely is a hosting problem more than a rewrite problem.

Older applications, current threats

An application written against an older framework does not get safer on its own. A patched operating system, a current PHP runtime, a WAF in front and audit logging behind it carry a great deal of the risk that the code cannot.

A small application does not need a smaller compliance posture. Every tier gets the same single-tenant isolation, encryption, backups and monitoring as the largest one; what changes between tiers is capacity, not safeguards.

A migration path, not an ultimatum

Moving a working clinical application is a risk in itself. Hosting it properly under a signed Business Associate Agreement buys the time to modernise deliberately instead of rewriting under pressure.

Consider concurrent requests, background jobs, database work and your application's memory needs. Traffic alone does not tell the whole story.
Storage and backups
Allow room for your application, database, uploads and expected growth. Compare the listed live-storage and backup allocations separately.
Data transfer
Estimate outgoing data from page visits, downloads and integrations, then compare it with the included transfer.
When to size up or scope a custom setup
Review capacity when monitoring shows sustained resource pressure or you expect a workload increase. Availability and recovery goals may require architecture changes, not simply a larger server.

CodeIgniter hosting questions

Our CodeIgniter application is old. Can you still host it?
Usually, yes. The question is which PHP version it needs. We run supported PHP releases, because an unsupported runtime stops receiving security fixes and that is not something a Business Associate Agreement can paper over. If your application needs an older version than we support, that is worth a conversation before anything moves.
Should we rewrite instead?
That is your call and it depends on the application, not on us. What hosting properly does is remove the pressure to decide immediately: a patched, isolated, logged environment under a BAA makes a working old application considerably safer while you plan.
Is a smaller application cheaper to make compliant?
The safeguards do not scale down. Encryption, isolation, logging, backups and a BAA are the same regardless of size. What scales is capacity, which is what separates the tiers.
